The things I seem to be going for visually are a) no trigger guard and b) a cylinder and barrel relatively low to the hand. On a Colt Navy:

the barrel is high above the hand for that distinctive six-gun look.

Rifles of the period are lame, with apparently no look between flintlock-styled percussion rifles and too-modern-looking bolt actions.
